Savona

Savona is the second port of the Riviera, west of Genoa.

Its commune bought the marquis Ottone Del Carretto's banal rights in its territory on 10 April 1191 and his rights in Quiliano and Albisola on 22 November 1192; Henry VI confirmed its independence on 18 November 1191. It is bound to Genoa by older conventions (agreements of 1153 and 1155 gave Savona and Noli autonomy under Genoese protection) but resents Genoese control of the sea and sides with the emperor. In 1198 it bought land from the marquises del Bosco.

On 1 January 1200 Savona is a free commune with its own small contado, friendly with the Del Carretto, and watched by Genoa.
