Town · The court at Kyoto and its provinces · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Sado kokufu (Sawata)

The Sado provincial seat lies at Sawata on the island's inner plain, with the provincial temple.

Sado is a place of exile for the court (the best-known exiles, Juntoku in 1221 and Nichiren in 1271, are later), and its people pay in salt and hemp (recalled). A tale of gold dust washed at Sado is told in the Konjaku monogatari (recalled), but the island's mining is of the seventeenth century. The island has a court governor on paper and local families whose names we could not find for 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: Seat only.
