Frontier town · Kingdom of Denmark · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Sønderborg

A castle and young town on Als, both laid out in the later 1100s; the town's hinterland was Als and most of Sundeved, and its site suited shipping and fishing.

It probably received market-town privileges in the first half of the 1200s; later in the Middle Ages it passed back and forth between kings and dukes (danmarkshistorien).
