Frontier town · Kingdom of Denmark · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Nordborg

A castle on northern Als dated to about 1150; the town that grew round it is first named in 1313 (danmarkshistorien).

The captive Bishop Valdemar of Schleswig was held here from 1193 until 1198, when he was moved to Søborg on Zealand (en.wikipedia). In 1200 a castle, not a town.

Where the sources disagree

  • en.wikipedia (Canute VI) has the bishop held at Søborg from the start; en.wikipedia (Valdemar II) has Nordborg 1193-1198. On 1 January 1200 he is at Søborg either way.

Evidence: General history; the prison detail rests on en.wikipedia.
