Montepulciano

A prosperous hill town between the Val d'Orcia and the Valdichiana, already an autonomous commune under Barbarossa (when it hosted a German count), allied by turns with Florence and Siena.

Siena has fought it through the twelfth century; the Poliziani resist with help from Perugia and Orvieto and, later, Florence. Siena will give up its claims after its defeat at Montalto in 1207, and Montepulciano's independence is recognised in 1208 after it turns to Florence.
