Lerici

The harbour and castle on the east side of the Gulf of La Spezia.

The bishops of Luni had comital rights here (confirmed by Frederick I in 1186 and Henry VI in 1191), but the lords of Arcola and Vezzano sold their shares of the hill to Genoa in 1152, when the castle was begun, and the Malaspina had to give up Lerici after their defeat at Monleone in 1174. Pisa holds it only from 1241 to 1256. The Genoa-Pisa peace of 1217 will be signed here.
