Maelienydd (Welsh)

The native dynasty of Maelienydd, the upland between the Ithon and the Teme.

Roger Mortimer, whose father's men killed Cadwallon ap Madog in 1179, invaded with royal troops in 1195 and rebuilt Cymaron; by 1200 he holds the land. The family is in exile or in the hills, and comes back after 1212 under Llywelyn's protection.

Where the sources disagree

  • Wikipedia's Maelienydd article places Mortimer's conquest 'by 1200' and his charter of liberties to Cwm Hir in 1200; whether that charter falls before or after 1 January is not pinned.

Evidence: Annal entries and one Wikipedia article.

On the map: Drawn as a claim over Mortimer's conquest.
