Cetina to Neretva coast

The narrow coast under the Biokovo from the Cetina to the Neretva, with Makarska and the hinterland of Vrgorac, had been part of Hum (Zahumlje), the principality of Nemanja's brother Miroslav.

In 1198, while he was duke of Croatia and Dalmatia, Andrew took it and called himself duke of Hum. Miroslav died about 1198 and the Hum nobles chose his son Peter (Petar) over his brother Andrew (Andrija), who went into exile in Raška; Duke Andrew fled Hungary in 1199. The sources do not say who held this coast on 1 January 1200: Prince Peter of Hum, the crown through its ban, the Kačić next door, or the villages under nobody.

It is drawn as contested.

cro realm record (Andrew took the land between the Cetina and the Neretva from Hum before May 1198 and styled himself duke of Hum); English Wikipedia (Zachlumia: Andrew prince of Dalmatia, Croatia and Hum from March 1198, a Hungarian period in Hum in 1198-1199, Petar son of Miroslav duke of Hum 1196-1216 in its list); FMG (Miroslav of Hum died about 1198).

Overlord

Claimed by the crown (Andrew's conquest of 1198) and by Hum

What it holds

  • The Makarska coast (the Krajina) and the Vrgorac hinterland between the Cetina and the Neretva.

How it was acquired

Taken from Hum by Duke Andrew in 1198.

Allies and rivals

The crown, Prince Peter of Hum and the Kačić all have an interest; the Neretva delta beyond is Hum's (outside).

How things stand that morning

Not pinned: claimed by the crown since 1198, and by Hum (Prince Peter) by older right.

Wealth

Flocks, olives and fishing; the coastal road from Omiš to the Neretva.

Military

No castle or garrison recorded.

Threats

  • A new contest for Hum among Miroslav's heirs and the Serbian princes.

Places of note

  • Makarska: Harbour of the Krajina coast.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Andrew's conquest is dated to 1198; the holder in the winter of 1199-1200 is unknown.

On the map: The strip is drawn as contested because the holder is unknown, not because fighting is recorded there that winter.
