Varendra: the Barind between the Mahananda and the Karatoya

The high red Barind between the Ganges, the Mahananda and the Karatoya: the great tanks (dighis), the Atrai lowland and the Punarbhava channel, the temple of Pradyumnesvara at Deopara and the monasteries of Somapura, Jagaddala and the lesser viharas.

English Wikipedia's Karnat page speaks of the Varendra rebellion that weakened the Palas; the Senas have long since taken the country. Their northern march reaches the Kamarupa frontier at Devikot.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Sena plates; the Deopara inscription is Vijayasena's; the viharas from the campaign board.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: A rough outline from rivers and ridges; the real order was villages, estates and chiefs.
