Upper Bailong Tibetans

Tibetan herding and farming villages in the upper Bailong country, on the high edge of the Song's Longnan strip.

They bring horses to the fair at Danchang, which the Xihe office keeps for the Xingzhou command, and buy tea, salt and cloth at Wudu and Danchang. The Song hold the markets and the road; the villages decide for themselves by headmen and feud.

What it holds

  • The upper Bailong valleys
  • The mountain roads west to the Tibetan country

How it was acquired

Hereditary.

Allies and rivals

Trade with Danchang and Wudu; no known quarrel with the Jin, whose Min county lies to the north.

How things stand that morning

No revolt or campaign is known for the winter of 1199-1200. The horse trade runs under the Song's licence.

Wealth

Horses, herds, furs; no figures.

Military

Village fighters; no numbers.

Threats

  • A closed market at Danchang.
  • Famine in a hard winter.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: The Song's Danchang horse fair and the tribes who supply it are in the campaign board and Chen Xifeng 2024's account of the Xingzhou horse quota; no chief or village is named.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: A rough block over scattered valleys; the Jin and the Tibet map border it on the north and west.
