Baltistan

The Indus basin below the Karakoram, Tibetan in speech and Buddhist in 1200; Islam reaches it in the fourteenth century.

Its chiefs answer to nobody consistently; the Kashmir writers call the country Bolor. Tibetan suzerainty gave way in the ninth to tenth century (Wikipedia, Skardu), and medieval Baltistan has three main chiefdoms: Skardu, Shigar and Khaplu.
