Shicheng

Shicheng jun is one of the four commanderies, placed at Zhanyi (Qujing) by the Chinese Wikipedia, and governed Mimi and more than ten other bu (Chinese Wikipedia, 曲靖市).

Nanzhao destroyed the Cuan here in 748 and made the country part of the Tuodong command. English Wikipedia says the thirty-seven tribes of north-east Yunnan had been allied with the Duan since 971; the campaign board puts the oath at Shicheng, which we could not confirm in the page text we read. It is the junction of the Five Foot road from Sichuan and the horse road to Guizhou and the Song.

Where the sources disagree

  • Board 'shicheng-qujing' puts the town at Qujing (25.49 N 103.80 E). The Chinese list puts the jun at Zhanyi, a little north; we draw both.

Evidence: The jun's name, 748 and the alliance of 971.
