The royal trading town at the head of the Oslofjord, founded as a market by Harald Hardrada about 1048 and a bishop's seat since about 1070 (en.wikipedia), with St Hallvard as its saint.
It is the Uplands' gate to the sea. The Cistercians of Hovedøya (first mentioned 1147) sit on their island in the bay and the Benedictine nuns of Nonneseter (first mentioned 1180) by the town (snl.no klostre). Sverre's great levy took it from the Bagler on 25 or 26 July 1197; in autumn 1199 he made it his winter quarters. On 1 January 1200 it is Sverre's town, held by his host and threatened: the Bagler under Reidar attack it at Yule, and on 6 March 1200 the farmers of Viken come against it and are beaten, partly in Bjørvika.

Lord in 1200
The king, whose town it is; that winter King Sverre in person with his host. The bishop, Nicholas Arnesson, the Bagler leader, is in Denmark; his see and his fortified residence are in the occupied town (who keeps the residence is not pinned).
How things stand that morning
Sverre's winter quarters and the strongest point he holds in the east.
Charter
None. A royal trading town (kaupstad) since Harald Hardrada's time.
Council
No town council in 1200. Norwegian towns met in a town assembly under the king's officer; no Oslo officer is named for 1200.
Communities
Townsmen, the bishop's clergy and household, the Cistercian monks of Hovedøya and the Benedictine nuns of Nonneseter.
Militia
Not recorded fighting for Sverre; the farmers' army of March 1200 comes against the town.
Walls and castle
No town wall. The king's residence (kongsgård) and the bishop's residence, which Bishop Nicholas built up and fortified (snl.no Nikolas Arnesson); St Hallvard's cathedral. Akershus castle is about a century later.
Trade and crafts
The market of the inner Oslofjord and the outlet of the Uplands' goods by the roads from Lake Mjøsa; ships to Denmark and the Baltic. Details for 1200 are thin. en.wikipedia's statement that Rostock merchants settled here in the late 12th century runs ahead of Rostock's own beginnings and is not used.
What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- Yule 1199-1200 (day not pinned)Reidar Sendemann's Bagler attack the town (snl.no).Depends on: The Bagler return from Denmark. Stopped by: Sverre's guard.
- 6 March 1200The farmers' battle at Oslo: Sverre beats them band by band, partly in Bjørvika (Koht; snl.no Bjørvika).Depends on: The farmers' gathering. Stopped by: Terms between Sverre and the farmers.
- late March 1200 and afterSverre leaves for Bergen; during 1200 the Bagler come back into Østlandet (snl.no Sigurd Jarlsson); who holds Oslo after Sverre leaves is not pinned.Depends on: Sverre's departure. Stopped by: A Birkebeiner garrison left in Oslo.
Places of note
- Hovedøya Abbey: Cistercian abbey, first mentioned 1147.
- Bjørvika: Battle with the farmers, March 1200.
Where the sources disagree
- Sverre's 1197 attack from Hovedøya: 25 July (en.wikipedia History of Oslo; Koht) or 26 July (en.wikipedia Sverre).
Evidence: The civil-war events are from the saga via the encyclopaedias; the town's own institutions in 1200 are thinly recorded.
On the map: Its near land only (about 6 km).
