Longwei pass

Longwei (Dragon Tail) closes the south end of the plain where the Xi'er river leaves the lake, on the road to Weishan, Xiangyun, Chuxiong and Shanchan.

Tang armies that marched up this road in 751 and 754 were destroyed on the Erhai plain (English Wikipedia, Nanzhao; the fighting is placed round the lake, not pinned to this gate). The modern city of Xiaguan stands on the pass. The campaign board's coordinate for Yangjumie (25.606 N 100.267 E) is this place, not the capital.

Walls and castle

A gate in a wall that closes the plain (board; later accounts). Dali-period fabric not described.

Trade and crafts

The road to Chuxiong and Shanchan: salt from Heijing, rice, cloth, horses.

Where the sources disagree

  • Board 'dali-yangjumie' puts Yangjumie at this pass; we place the capital under the Cangshan near the Old Town (see Yangjumie).
  • Board 'longwei-guan' (secure): 'the wall that closes the capital from the Chuxiong road'. A wall there is likely; its age is not shown.

Evidence: The place and the road are secure; the gate's state in 1200 is not described.
