Beruas: the river settlement behind the Dinding coast

A river settlement behind the Dinding coast, remembered in Malay tradition as the seat of an old kingdom called Gangga Negara.

There is early material in the ground, but nothing that fixes a ruler or a date, so the entry is a place rather than a polity (board). The Gangga Negara of the traditions (the Sejarah Melayu and later) has no inscription and no Chinese notice that we could reach; we do not draw it as a kingdom.

Lord in 1200

not known: no source names a lord, governor or headman for 1 January 1200

How things stand that morning

No lord, governor or garrison is named by any source for 1 January 1200. Treat as a landing or settlement on the route whose overlord, if any, is not known.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board marks it 'contested'; the dispute is whether the traditional kingdom existed at all.

Evidence: Thin: from the campaign board's inference, archaeology and later sources; nothing dated 1 January 1200 names it.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
