Luzhou Yi chiefs

The Yi (called Man or Yi in the Song record) of the hills south of Xuzhou and Luzhou round Changning, Gongzhou, Junlian and Xuyong: hill villagers who give the Song border posts a nominal obedience and deal at the salt wells and the Luzhou market.

The Song keep a southern frontier pacification post at Luzhou for them, and Changning jun and Gongzhou are the garrison posts.

Overlord

The Song at Luzhou and Xuzhou give titles and hold the towns; the chiefs hold the hills.

What it holds

  • Changning, Gongzhou and Junlian hills
  • The Xuyong hills
  • The salt well at Yujing (Changning)

How it was acquired

Hereditary.

Allies and rivals

The Song posts at Luzhou, Xuzhou, Changning; Guizhou's Bozhou and Luodian lie to the south and east.

How things stand that morning

No rising is known for the winter. The Yi chiefs are tolerated as long as the salt market stays open.

Wealth

Salt dealing, hemp, herds.

Military

Hill fighters; no numbers.

Threats

  • A Song garrison raid after a theft.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: The Songshi's Manyi chapters (recalled, not re-read) name the Qiang, Tibetan and Man groups of the Sichuan edge, but no chief of 1200 is known to me. The record says what kind of power it is and where, and nothing more.

On the map: Rough; the Yi country continues into the scs sheet's Guizhou.
