Lincang chiefs

South of Yongchang across the Lancang lie the basins of Lincang, Yongde, Gengma and Zhenkang, valley floors of Tai rice-farmers ringed by Wa and Pu hill villages.

No Dali-period source we could read names a lord or a fu here; Nanzhao's Yongchang command lay west of the Lancang and its Yinsheng command east of it, and these basins fall between them. The Yuan later put the Jinchi and Mong Mao country under one pacification office. We treat them as self-governing valley chiefs and Wa and Pu villages, within Dali's reach only by title.
