The Tetun-speaking south and centre of Timor, from the coast of Malaka to the hills of Belu, with Atapupu the usable roadstead on the north coast.
In Timorese tradition Wehali is the ritual centre of the whole island, to which Tetun, Bunak and Kemak speakers were aligned (en.wikipedia, History of East Timor); the south Tetun are matrilineal (see Wehali). Tradition is not record: the first dated notice is of 1522. The sandalwood comes down from the interior through highland hands. Nothing says whether Wehali exists as such in 1200; the record gives the country and the tradition, and no ruler.
