Onjōji

The Tendai house of the Enchin line, which split from Enryakuji in 993 and has fought it ever since.

It stands on the lakeshore at Ōtsu below Mount Nagara, with a strong lay following, a famous bell and a long record of being burned: by the mountain's monks in 1081, 1121, 1140 and 1163, and by the Taira in 1180, always rebuilt [not yet checked against the source]. Its great wish is its own ordination platform (kaidan), which Enryakuji has always blocked. It is smaller than the mountain but cannot be crushed, and its monks are skilled fighters.
