Zamboanga

The point of the long western peninsula of Mindanao commands the Basilan strait (board).

The campaign board adds that a place called Sanmalan appears in Chinese notices of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and is often placed here, but the reading is a guess and other scholars put it elsewhere; we could not trace the passage and give it no weight. No chief or town is named for 1200.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry id zamboanga-sanmalan: the Sanmalan identification is not confirmed (we could not find the Chinese passage).

Evidence: Geography and an untraced board claim. The campaign board marks it 'contested' as a reading.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: A place marker; the ground round it, if any, is drawn in the lord and province records.
