Port · Self-governing peoples of Island Southeast Asia · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Waingapu

A bay on the dry north coast of Sumba, backed by open grassland running up to sandalwood scrub.

Sumba was known to Europeans for centuries as the Sandalwood Island and the name is the point of the place; the plains behind Melolo to the south-east are where the cutting was done. The wetter west round Kodi has more people and food and trades north to Sumbawa. Sumba is a name in the Nagarakretagama's list of 1365 (the campaign board; en.wikipedia).
