Tashkurgan is a stone fort and small settlement on a high valley floor at about three thousand metres, the gate between Kashgar and the Wakhan corridor and the oldest named waypoint on the road between China and the west (the campaign board's words, and Tashkurgan is on the Chinese list of national monuments as 'Tashkurgan Ruins').
Barley is the only crop; the fort exists to tax and shelter the road. From here the tracks go west to Wakhan and Badakhshan and south by the Mintaka and Kilik passes to Hunza and the Indus. The lord is not recorded.
