Charklik

Charklik is the last oasis on the southern road before the salt plains of Lop Nur and the long crossing to Dunhuang.

Marco Polo's 'town of Lop' is most likely this place (Wikipedia 'Charklik'). It was an ancient Shanshan site. No lord is recorded for 1200; the headmen and the guides of the desert are its own.
