Taal volcano

A live volcano on an island in a lake in a crater, a few hours inland of the Batangas anchorages (board).

Its eruptions are frequent and violent, and its ash has buried settlements on this coast more than once; the dated record of those eruptions begins long after 1200, and no eruption is dated for 1199 or 1200. The lake shore and the Batangas coast below it are settled country; nothing names a chief or a town here before the Spanish.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board's 'secure' means the volcano is certain; no settlement or event is dated to 1200.

Evidence: Geography and the campaign board only. The campaign board marks it 'secure' as a place; nothing is known of 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: A place marker; the ground round it, if any, is drawn in the lord and province records.
