Frontier town · The Chola empire of Kulottunga III · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Salem

A town in the gap between the Shevaroy and Nagavalli hills, on the road from the Kaveri and the delta to Tagadur (Dharmapuri) and the Mysore plateau.

It is the natural gate of the Chola-Hoysala border in the Kongu belt. The English Wikipedia places the Chola-Hoysala fighting of 1187-88 in Kongu and does not name Salem.
