Kaveripattinam (Puhar)

The Sangam-age capital and port of the Chola kings at the mouth of the Kaveri, called Puhar.

In the poems it is a great emporium with a merchants' quarter and foreign traders; by the twelfth century the sea and the river's shifting have reduced it and the traffic has gone to Nagapattinam and the Coromandel ports. It is a village with temples and a few warehouses in 1200; the pages we read say nothing dated about it.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry kaveripattinam-puhar (11.139,79.849) is accepted. The assignment lists it as a town; we could find no 1200 source for any quarter or official there.

Evidence: Short secondary sources only; no dated record of the person or office for 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
