Murau is first named in 1250 ('Murowe'); the Liechtenstein court on the Mur is named in 1256 and town rights follow in 1298.
On 1 January 1200 there is no recorded place of that name: the upper Mur valley round it is ground of the duchy, of St. Lambrecht abbey and of Freising's Oberwölz lordship nearby.
