Enns

The Styrian market town at the crossing of the Enns, beside the old Roman Lauriacum, below the Georgenberg where Ottokar IV of Styria and Leopold V sealed the Georgenberg compact on 17 August 1186.

The Ennsburg, built about 900 against the Hungarians, was given to Passau in 976; the market was founded by the Otakar margraves. Its fair on the Danube road made it a meeting place of merchants from the upper Danube and the east. Fortifications are dated from 1193.
