Chernigov, on the high right bank of the Desna where the Stryzhen joins it, is one of the great towns of Rus' and the seat of the senior Olgovich and of a bishop.
It has three walled parts, each on its own headland and cut off by deep ravines: the citadel (detinets), of about 13 hectares, with the princes' court and the cathedrals; the outer town (okolny grad) to the south-west, where most people live; and the suburbs beyond, closed by a rampart about 7 km long. Its churches include the Saviour cathedral (begun under Mstislav in the 1030s), the Boris and Gleb cathedral, the Assumption church of the Yelets monastery, St Elijah's at the Boldino hills, and the Annunciation church that Sviatoslav Vsevolodovich built on his court in 1186; the Pyatnitskaya church is of about this time, its exact date not pinned. Rich boyar houses stand beside poor dwellings.

Lord in 1200
Prince Igor Sviatoslavich, senior prince of the Olgovichi
How things stand that morning
Held by Igor as senior prince since 1198; quiet that winter.
Charter
None: Rus' towns of this age have no charters; the townsmen live under the prince's law (the Russkaya Pravda) and his officers' courts.
Council
No town council. A town assembly (veche) is not recorded at Chernigov in these years; the prince governs through his commander of the town host (tysyatsky) and his boyars.
Communities
The bishop and the clergy of the cathedrals and monasteries; boyars and retainers; craftsmen and traders. No colony of foreign merchants is recorded.
Fairs and markets
Weekly markets under the prince; fair days not pinned.
Militia
The town host under the tysyatsky, called out by the prince.
Walls and castle
Earth ramparts with timber walls round the citadel, the outer town and the suburbs (the citadel and outer town walls date from the late 10th and early 11th centuries); brick churches; the princes' court in the citadel.
Trade and crafts
Metalwork, jewellery, glass bracelets, bone carving and pottery; the Desna trade down to Kiev and up to the Vyatichi land; furs, honey and wax from the forests; the princes' and boyars' estates round the town.
What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- Spring 1201 or late 1202 (beyond 1200)Passes to Oleg Sviatoslavich on Igor's death.Depends on: Igor's natural death. Stopped by: Play.
Places of note
- The Saviour cathedral: The princes' burial church, begun in the 1030s.
- The Yelets monastery: Assumption monastery outside the outer town.
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: Archaeology (Rybakov and later) is rich; the chronicle says little of the town's own institutions.
