Debryansk, 'the town in the thickets', is first named in the chronicle in 1146.
The settlement of 1200 stands on the Chashin barrow by the Desna, dated by excavation to the late 10th century; the town moved to the Pokrov hill only in the 13th century, and it becomes a princely capital only in 1246.
