The bishop's town on the Temo, a short way upriver from the sea, with its cathedral of San Pietro outside the later town.
The castle of Serravalle above the present town, which tradition gives to the Malaspina in 1112 or 1121, belongs to the second half of the thirteenth century; in 1200 the Malaspina have no hold here.
