Tuyuhun, Dangxiang

The Tuyuhun, a Xianbei kingdom of the Qinghai basin, fell to the Tibetan Empire in 670 and its people were split: one group went east into China, the rest stayed under Tibetan rule (Wikipedia, Tuyuhun).

The page we read names no Tuyuhun tribe of the Song, Jin or Xia period, and we have no source that does. The Dangxiang (Tanguts) are better documented: their early home was the highlands of west Sichuan and south-east Qinghai (Wikipedia, Tangut people), and the Xia state is theirs; the branch that stayed in Kham is the Minyak (see Minyak chiefs). So the remnants are shown as a note on the Gonghe basin, where the Tuyuhun and the Tang fought at the Dafei river (recalled), not as a polity.

How it was acquired

Not applicable.

Allies and rivals

Merged with the Tsongkha tribes; the Xia Tangut officials at Xining.

How things stand that morning

No separate polity known.

No numbers survive for 1200.

Places of note

  • Gonghe basin (the old Tuyuhun heartland), approximate: Marker only.

Where the sources disagree

  • The Tarim sheet mentions the Tuyuhun background of the Hexi; we know of no document that puts a Tuyuhun chief in Qinghai in 1200.

Evidence: The assignment asks for these remnants; the honest finding is that no source we could reach shows them as a separate power in 1200.

On the map: Marker only.
