Tamil guild of Lobu Tua

A Tamil inscription of Saka 1010 (1088) set up at Lobu Tua by the merchant corporation known as the Five Hundred (Ainnurruvar) of the Thousand Directions lays down what shipmasters and traders pay in gold: a foreign guild with its own toll schedule on the camphor beach.

The English Wikipedia article on Barus (citing Miksic) says the site was abandoned about the turn of the twelfth century and that a settlement at Bukit Hasang began in the mid-twelfth century. So on 1 January 1200 the guild town is probably a ruin, and the guild, if it survives, has moved or gone; we could not pin the end more closely.

None named.

What it holds

  • Its own warehouses and the right, by agreement with the local chief, to settle disputes among its members

How things stand that morning

Probably gone or moved by 1200: the settlement is reported abandoned about the turn of the twelfth century (Miksic), though the end could fall later in the century. Not pinned.

Places of note

  • Lobu Tua: Excavated Tamil settlement north of Barus; the inscription dates to 1088.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Fair: a dated inscription and excavations; the end date of the settlement is not pinned and the campaign board's 'secure' is too strong for 1200.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: No drawn parts: the port's land is on its town record.
