Križevci county

Križevci county is the larger, eastern half of Slavonia: from the Kalnik hills and the castle of Križevci across the Bilogora to the Drava bank at Koprivnica and Virovitica, and east toward the Papuk.

It is a royal castle county, but much of it is kindred land: the Monoszló kindred hold Monoszló (Podravska Moslavina) on the Drava, granted by Béla III with the right to the marten tax there (Monoszló kindred), and the bishop of Zagreb holds Čazma and other estates (Church map). The ispán of 1199-1200 is not named in the sources used here.

Not named in the sources used for 1199-1200; the king's appointee (an Emeric partisan since summer 1199, per Zsoldos 2022 on the exile period). Upper Križevci is first named in 1193 under Béla III (English Wikipedia); the county is with Zagreb the core of Slavonia (Hrvatska enciklopedija).

What it holds

  • Križevci castle and its castle land.
  • The royal castle of Kalnik on its ridge (first dated mention not pinned here).
  • The Drava bank at Koprivnica, Đurđevac and Virovitica (no towns yet: Virovitica's privileges are 1234, Koprivnica's later).
  • The Bilogora and the upper Česma and Ilova.

How it was acquired

Royal county; Upper Križevci named 1193.

Allies and rivals

Across the Drava lies Somogy (hut); to the east the Hungarian counties of Baranya, Valkó and Požega (hut, hpl, Požega).

How things stand that morning

Royal county under an unnamed ispán loyal to Emeric that winter (inferred); kindreds who backed Andrew (the Monoszló) hold land inside it.

Wealth

Marten tax, castle-folk dues, the Drava crossings, Kalnik wine, pigs and timber of the Bilogora.

Military

Križevci and Kalnik; castle warriors. No numbers recorded.

Threats

  • Andrew's partisans among the kindreds.

Places of note

  • Križevci: County castle.
  • Kalnik castle: Royal hill castle above Križevci.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: First mention 1193; ispán and extent in 1200 not pinned.

On the map: Rough extent; the eastern line toward Hungarian Baranya and Požega is not fixed in the sources for 1200.
