Jericho and Kanina

The bay of Avlona (Vlore), with the hill fortress of Kanina above the town and Jericho (ancient Orikos) at the head of the bay, made a small Byzantine province in the 11th and 12th centuries, named in the 1198 chrysobull as 'provincia Jericho et Caninon'.

It holds the narrowest crossing of the strait, opposite Otranto, and the Normans landed here in 1081 and again under Bohemond in 1107.
