Halland

Halland, the long coast between Scania and the Göta river, is Danish since at least the 11th century and shares the Scanian law.

It has a special tie to Canute: his father gave it to him for his upkeep at his wedding in 1177, and in his father's last year he ruled Scania and Halland as co-king (DBL). Since 1182 it has simply been the king's. The 'count of Halland' belongs to the next reign: Valdemar II's illegitimate son Niels is count of Halland from 1216 until his death in 1218 (en.wikipedia), and the split of Halland at the Ätran comes later still.

King Valdemar's Census Book (1231) lists seven crown estates (kongelev) in Halland: Laholm, Halmstad, Faurås, Sjönevad, Vare, Grimeton and Tölö (sv.wikipedia). There is no chartered town in 1200: Halmstad's charter is of 1307, and Laholm, at the Lagan crossing, is the likeliest place of trade (en.wikipedia lists its privileges as 'about 1200', which the other sources read do not confirm). The land's assembly met at Getinge (en.wikipedia, undated).

What it holds

  • the crown estates of Laholm, Halmstad, Faurås, Sjönevad, Vare, Grimeton and Tölö (Census Book, 1231: whether each was royal in 1200 is not pinned)
  • the herred courts and the levy of Halland
  • the river crossings and landing places of the Lagan, Nissan, Ätran and Viskan
  • the northern march against Västergötland toward the Göta river

How it was acquired

Danish since the 11th century or earlier; Canute's own since 1177.

Allies and rivals

Sweden across the northern and eastern frontier is friendly under Sverker II.

How things stand that morning

The king's, with no lord between him and the farmers. The officers are not named. The northern border: sv.wikipedia says Halland's border was originally the Göta river and moved somewhat south during the 1200s, so on 1 January 1200 the coast between Lindome and the Göta river (the later Askim and Sävedal hundreds) may still be Halland's: not pinned. The drawing follows the later line north of Lindome.

Wealth

Cattle, salmon of the Halland rivers, the herring of the Kattegat coast, the crown estates. No figures.

Military

No castle is attested for 1200: Varberg, Falkenberg, Lagaholm and Halmstad castles are later. The Halland levy and ship districts.

Threats

  • none pressing; the Swedish frontier is quiet

Places of note

  • Laholm: crown estate at the Lagan crossing
  • Halmstad: crown estate on the Nissan
  • Getinge: the Halland assembly place

Where the sources disagree

  • The brief warns that the 'count of Halland' title belongs to the 1210s: confirmed. DBL shows Halland as Canute's own from 1177, so on 1 January 1200 the holder is the king.
  • Northern border: sv.wikipedia (Halland) says the boundary was originally the Göta river and moved south during the 1200s; the date of the shift is not given.

Evidence: Canute's tie to Halland is attested (DBL); the estates come from the Census Book of 1231; the officers and the exact northern line in 1200 are not pinned.

On the map: The outline follows the historical Halland of later centuries and shares its vertices with the Swedish researcher's Västergötland and Finnveden lines (sws); the 1200 line in the north is not pinned, and the inland boundary with Småland and Västergötland ran through forest.
