The Camposampiero hold castles on the Padua and Treviso border and fiefs of both bishops.
Gherardo is Ezzelino II's bitter enemy: the heiress Cecilia d'Abano had been offered to him and was married instead to Ezzelino, and Gherardo raped her in revenge (date uncertain, before 1194). In 1195-1200 Gherardo is close to the commune of Treviso: on 29 June 1199 he swore to defend the Livenza towns against the patriarch, and in 1200 he witnesses Treviso's peace with the bishop of Feltre and Belluno and its arbitration with the patriarch.
