Country or people · The kingdom of Lanka at Polonnaruwa · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Malaya Rata

The mountain country of the central highlands (the later Kandyan hills) between the Mahaweli and the Uva basin, with the peak of Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) on its south-west edge.

It is a land of hill villages, forest and terraced rice, claimed by Polonnaruwa and governed by its own chiefs. Its chiefs will become the Kandyan chiefs in later centuries; in 1200 no kingdom of Kandy exists.
