Gayo and Alas highlands

The highland interior of northern Sumatra: the Gayo country round the lake of Takengon and the Alas valley down to Kutacane, with the Singkil river's head to the west.

The Gayo and Alas appear in no source before the Dutch; they are drawn because a mountain interior of this size, between the Aceh ports and the Batak country, does not stand empty, and because the Singkil and Tamiang rivers rise in it. What they sold, and to whom, in 1200 is not recorded: forest goods by position only. This is an inference from geography and not a record of a people.

What it holds

  • The highland villages and forest

How things stand that morning

Not recorded. Highland villages; no chief, no market and no ruler is named.

Where the sources disagree

  • No board place lies in this interior; the people are our addition, drawn from the logic of the rivers (the Tamiang and the Singkil both rise here).

Evidence: Thin: geography and the silence of the sources; this is a placeholder for a people, not a described people.

On the map: Drawn on the modern regencies (kabupaten) that match the people's later homeland; the boundaries of 1200 are not known.
