The middle kingdom of Wales, lying across the upper Severn and the Dee and open to England along the Shropshire border, divided since 1160.
Southern Powys is ruled by Gwenwynwyn, the most ambitious prince of 1197-98, who failed before Painscastle in August 1198 but still holds Cyfeiliog, Caereinion, Mechain, Arwystli and the Severn lands round Pool. Northern Powys is ruled by Madog ap Gruffudd Maelor, Llywelyn's cousin, from the Maelors, Ial and Nanheudwy. Powysian lords cling to their freedom between Gwynedd and the English March.
