The Finnic-speaking Mordvins live in two peoples: the Erzya in the north-east between the lower Oka, the Tesha and the Sura, and the Moksha to the south-west on the Moksha and the Tsna.
The Meshchera, a related Finnic people, live in the forest and marsh lowland north of the Oka between Ryazan, Murom and the Klyazma. None has a ruler: they live in clan villages under elders, with fortified places in the forests. The Rus' chronicles first name the Mordva under 1103, when they beat Prince Yaroslav Sviatoslavich of Murom (Markov 1914; the attackers may have been Erzya or Moksha).
Squeezed between the Rus' of Murom, Ryazan and Vladimir (whose fort at Gorodets watches the Volga) and the Bulgars, they pay tribute where they are weak and raid where they can. There is no Rus' town at the Oka mouth yet.
Who rules
- Name
- none named for 1200
- Title
- no ruler: clans and their elders
- Confidence
- high
No Mordvin leader is named in any source for these years. The chiefs Purgas (Erzya) and Puresh (Moksha) appear in the Rus' chronicles only in the late 1220s: later.
Overlord
None over the whole. Markov (1914) found no evidence that any Rus' prince subjected Mordvin land before the 13th century; the Bulgars had influence and took tribute from some (en.wikipedia Mordvins). Who paid whom in 1200 is not pinned; Rus' princes of Murom and Ryazan may have taken tribute from their nearest neighbours.
What the realm holds
How it was acquired
Native peoples of the region; Erzya and Moksha are distinct from the first centuries AD (burial customs, en.wikipedia Mordvins).
Allies and rivals
Rus' princes of Murom, Ryazan and Vladimir (tribute takers and raiders); Volga Bulgaria (tribute taker, trading partner and later ally of the Erzya); the Burtas to the south-east.
The realm that morning
Self-governing clans; no war with the Rus' is recorded for 1199-1200. Across the borders: Murom and Ryazan on the Oka, Vladimir at Gorodets on the Volga, Volga Bulgaria and its Mari tributaries beyond the Sura, the Burtas on the upper Sura and the Volga upland, the steppe to the south.
Wealth
Furs, honey and wax from the forests, farming in clearings, cattle; trade with Murom, Ryazan and Bulgar.
Military
Clan levies fighting in the forests; no numbers known.
Threats
- Rus' tribute expeditions from Murom, Ryazan and Vladimir
- Bulgar demands
What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- 1221 and 1226-1232 (after this year)Yuri II founds Nizhny Novgorod at the Oka mouth (1221); the Vladimir princes campaign against the Erzya chief Purgas, allied to the Moksha chief Puresh and later the Bulgars.
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: Only scattered chronicle notices and archaeology; no Mordvin leader or event is recorded for 1199-1200. The name Meshchera itself is first recorded in later documents.
On the map: The peoples are drawn as three provinces (Erzya, Moksha, Meshchera); their edges are rough.
Primary sources for this realm
