The Meshchera lowland is a triangle of forest, bog and lakes bounded by the Oka on the south, the Moskva on the south-west and the Klyazma on the north (en.wikipedia Meshchera Lowlands), named after a Finnic people who lived there and later merged with Slavs and Turkic newcomers.
In 1200 the Rus' hold the river valleys round it (Ryazan and Kolomna on the Oka, Murom, Vladimir on the Klyazma) and the Meshchera the interior. Gorodets Meshchersky (Kasimov) on its southern edge, on the Oka, is said by later tradition to have been founded in 1152; its state and lord in 1200 are not pinned, and the Oka shore from Kasimov to Yelatma is drawn as Meshchera ground (in line with the Vladimir sheet's anchor at Kasimov).
