Zanjan

Zanjan, on the high road from Qazvin to Tabriz, is the gate between the Jibal and Azerbaijan.

Here Tekish's commander Mayajuq defeated the Eldiguzid Qutlugh Inanj in 591/1195, and in the Diwan's settlement of that year Zanjan was kept for the Diwan (Ibn al-Athir). Who holds it on 1 January 1200 is not pinned: the Eldiguzid atabeg's lands end at Miyana (Anatolia map), the Khwarazmshah is master of the Jibal by the caliph's confirmation, and the Pahlavanid mamluks are strong in the region. East of the town lie the high summer meadows where Sultaniyya would be built in 1305; in 1200 they are pasture with no town.
