The patriarchs' fortified town on islands of the Livenza, facing Treviso's land across the river, and a favourite place for their stays and courts.
It obtained communal liberties, its own statutes and administration, in 1190. The castles of Caneva to the north and Cavolano to the south are its neighbours.
