Remagen

A royal manor town on the Rhine below the Ahr mouth, with town status reached between 1158 and 1189.

Burned by Philip's troops in 1198. Its seal of about 1200 calls it a free town, and in 1221 the community styles itself a 'civitas libera' answering only to the king. On the Apollinarisberg above it stands a provostry of Siegburg (about 1110).
