The castle town on the San that was the first seat of the Rostislavichi before Galich, and the head of the western Galician land with Jarosław and Sanok.
Its castle hill keeps the stone rotunda and palace of the 10th-11th centuries and later Rus' churches. Salt from the Przemyśl district reached Kiev (the Patericon's salt famine of 1097).
