A fortified town on the steep right bank of the Pronya, a little over 50 km south of modern Ryazan, ringed by deep ravines; the Nikon Chronicle first names it under 1131 (de.wikipedia).
It is the seat of the junior branch of the Ryazan house. Its strength was proved in 1186, when Roman besieged his brothers here, and its weakness is water: wells were hard to dig on the height, and besiegers cut off the river (Ilovaisky). It governs the Pronya valley.
