Nousiainen

A church site in the Mynä valley north of the Aura mouth, not a town.

Nousiainen first housed the bishopric of Finland, which moved to Koroinen in the 13th century (en.wikipedia Nousiainen). Its church was consecrated to the Virgin Mary (papal letter of 1232); the parish appears in records as 'de Nousia' in 1232 and 'Nosis' in 1234, when Bishop Thomas sealed a grant here, the oldest surviving letter written in Finland (en.wikipedia Thomas (bishop of Finland)). How far back the bishop's seat and the church go is not known: on 1 January 1200 there may be a wooden church, a Christian cemetery and a priest or two, with a mission bishop if one is in office.

The tradition that Bishop Henry was buried here and that his bones went to Turku in 1300 comes from late medieval legend.
