A village of the upper Vinschgau, first named in 1094 as 'Malles', perhaps an old assembly place of Chur's Rhaetia.
Above Burgeis nearby stands the Benedictine abbey of Marienberg, whose advocates are the Matsch. The upper valley is shared between the bishop of Chur, the Matsch and Tarasp lords and the counts of Tyrol, who make good their claim only in the thirteenth century.
