The old royal town at the fork of the Göta river, Norway's gate to Sweden and Denmark: the three kings met here in 1101 to fix the borders.
Sigurd the Crusader gave it a royal estate, a castle with moats and a relic of the True Cross, and about 1127 Snorri calls it the mightiest town in Norway (sv.wikipedia). The Wends sacked it on 10 August 1135 (uncertain; snl.no says 1136), carried off the relic and burned castle and church; the town was rebuilt a little to the west and never again a royal residence. In 1200 it is a lesser trading town with the Augustinian canons of Kastelle (before 1181, snl.no; sv.wikipedia names a house founded on the castle site in 1196).
It lies in Ranrike, the southern end of Viken, on the river road to the Swedish market at Lödöse upstream.

What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- January 1200Sigurd Jarlsson's Bagler attack the Birkebeiner in Ranrike (snl.no).Depends on: The Bagler return. Stopped by: Sverre's ships on the coast.
Where the sources disagree
- The Wendish sack: 10 August 1135 (sv.wikipedia, uncertain) or 1136 (snl.no). Kastelle canons: before 1181 (snl.no klostre) or a new house on the castle site in 1196 (sv.wikipedia).
Evidence: The town's state in 1200 is inferred; the civil-war actions in Ranrike that winter rest on snl.no's summary of the saga.
On the map: Near land only; Ranrike is drawn as contested ground and as part of the Viken war-zone belt.
